Leo’s Room – Small-Space Nursery Ideas

When we were planning Leo’s nursery, we were faced with a unique challenge. In our tiny California home, we only have 3 bedrooms. At the time, Leo’s room was my office / guest room. Space was already tight! I ended up selling my desk, and moving all of my office materials to a hall closet. But we still needed a guest room…

We decided to multitask his room, and try to keep a guest bed. We opted for a mini crib to save on space. I had Asher, then 4 years old, give one a spin at a baby furniture store to make sure it would be big enough. He fit, barely, but still! I love this one we found from Babyletto! As for a guest bed, I found this beautiful Stratton daybed from Pottery Barn. We love the storage baskets underneath – we keep extra bedding in one basket, and Leo’s toys in the others. We keep two twin mattresses on the daybed, so we can lay one mattress on the floor and comfortably sleep two guests. The mini crib is on wheels and can fit through doorways, so we can just wheel him into our room. Perfect!

Once we got the mechanics of the room solved, it was time for design and adding in other pieces of furniture. I knew I wanted a super comfortable rocking chair – I learned the first time around that I’d spent a LOT of time there! West Elm came to the rescue with this beauty, which has a great design that can move to the living room in a few years. This low bookshelf is great because Leo can grab books on his own – it’s just the right height. It’s height and position also helps it double as a side table next to the chair. In the closet, we added shelves and storage bins to keep everything organized and accessible.

As for a theme – we’re not too theme-y, but knew we wanted a cool, calm space that he could grow into. We went with a light coastal / adventure theme, with artist prints from Society 6, and various finds from local boutiques. He loves his room, and so do we! It really is a calming space, and we often retreat here when the afternoons get too hot, or the day has been too busy. Even Asher enjoys playing in here, and they love throwing the extra mattress on the floor for an indoor trampoline. It’s our little happy place!

It’s been bittersweet packing up this sweet little room, but we are definitely looking forward to having more space in our new home. Leo (who is now almost a 1 and a half!) will have is very own room, and guests will have their own space too. Stay tuned – toddler room on the way!!
